How does Unicode strikethrough text work?

Unlike HTML strikethrough (<s>) or Markdown, Unicode strikethrough text uses the combining character U+0336 (Combining Long Stroke Overlay) placed after each letter. This invisible character overlays the preceding letter to create the strikethrough effect, while remaining plain text that can be copied and pasted anywhere.

Example:

Original text: "Strikethrough"
Result: "S̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶"

Why use Unicode strikethrough text?

The advantage of strikethrough text via Unicode character is that it works everywhere copy-paste is possible, without needing special formatting:

Difference from HTML or Markdown strikethrough

HTML strikethrough (<del> or <s>) and Markdown strikethrough (~~text~~) only work in environments that interpret those formats. Unicode strikethrough works everywhere because it is part of the text itself.

Tip: Unicode strikethrough is often used humorously to "cross out" what one really thinks, like: "This is terrible amazing!"
